As a blend of natural glues, calcium carbonate (chalk), and pigments, distemper are an excellent choice for interior lime plastered walls.
Of equal importance is the fact that distemper is both authentic and appropriate when decorating an historic home in a style, sympathetic to certain period, such as Georgian and Victorian.
Contrary to perceptions - largely as a result of television costume dramas - historic homes were frequently far from grey or drab. Modest homes were frequently whitewashed as an affordable and practical finish, while those with the means - and a desire to display them - preferred to use stronger colours.
Unlike limewash, distempers are not high in alkalinity; this results in a broader spectrum of available colours to choose from. High alkalinity can cause certain colours, such as blue to fade quickly requiring recoating every few years.
The following are from various periods of the 1800's. Note the bold colours.
