Plaster and Harling

Lime has been used to protect and decorate buildings both inside and out for millennia.

Pressure to build fast with cheaper, short life cycle products has led to a reduction in the use of traditional lime plasters. This is a shame as lime is the perfect material for plastering and harling (rendering) and has been used for centuries many of our traditionally built structures were lined internally and coated externally.

Not only are these traditional finishes aesthetically pleasing, but they have proven themselves as a reliable and maintainable form of protection against our often harsh climate. Visit any Historic Scotland, National Trust of Scotland, English Heritage or other listed historic property and chances are you will see traditional lime plasters and renders and harling. When well maintained, these finishes stand out from the crowd, are beautiful, beneficial to your property and unique.

Not only do these materials breathe, but lime has certain properties that gypsum doesn't. For instance, the alkaline properties in lime create a product that is both mould inhibiting and a deterrent to insects.

McLean Historic Timber and Masonry Conservation are experienced in all aspects of lime plaster and harling. Please feel free to contact and discuss your requirements.
